Welcome

Welcome to my practice.  As you begin the process of finding a therapist
you may be wondering what therapy is like or what it can offer you.  I hope
my website will answer a few questions for you about my approach to psychotherapy.
If you have more questions after looking at my site, or would like to have an opportunity to talk with me, please call me at 301 767-5239 .

Psychotherapy

My goal as a therapist is to help you remove the emotional obstacles that keep you from living your life freely and happily.  These obstacles, such things as depression, uncontrolled anger or fear, stress and self-criticism, leftovers from the greater and lesser traumas of life, interfere with living a fully productive and contented life. While gently holding space for difficult situations of the past, we can work together to better understand what limits you now. Therapy will allow us to clearly see behaviors and thought patterns that may prevent you from experiencing a joyful and fulfilling life.

In the time we spend working together, we will discuss your history as it affects your life today, your present situation, and your future. We will free up places that feel stuck, and open the way for emotional growth.  Together, we will sort out the critical issues, freeing you from that which holds you back and keeps contentment out of reach.

In an initial evaluation I will work with you to determine the treatment most appropriate for your situation: individual, couples, or family therapy, or some combination of those.  In the case of adolescents, we will discuss how often and in what way parents might participate.

Mindfulness in Psychotherapy

Mindfulness is a term that applies broadly to a group of techniques for centering oneself in the present moment.  This process reduces tension, both physically and emotionally, as it heightens clarity and awareness of ones experience. It allows one to turn off the "fight or flight" response. Thirty years of research on mindfulness in thousands of studies has shown it to have consistent benefits for those suffering from depression, anxiety, or simply day to day stress.

While mindfulness skills can be taught on their own, I incorporate them into therapy, finding the best ways to use mindfulness given personal history, current stresses, and current coping skills. I have found the integration of psychotherapy and mindfulness to be a powerful combination for healing and changing course.
